Introduction
The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is the world’s largest uniformed youth organization, training high school and college students in leadership, discipline, social service and national awareness. Functioning as the youth wing of the Indian Armed Forces with the motto “Unity and Discipline,” the NCC offers voluntary military training for cadets choosing the Army, Navy, or Air Force wings. Though not obligated to join the military after NCC, cadets gain valuable life skills and potentially get preference during armed force selections.
Established in 1965, NCC Naval Wing Subunit (Senior Division) of St. Aloysius College Edathua operates under 5 Kerala Naval Unit NCC Changanacherry (NCC Kottayam Group, Kerala & Lakshadweep Directorate). With a sanctioned cadet strength of 50, the subunit focuses on social service and community development activities along with its military training regimen. We were chosen as the Best Subunit under 5 Kerala Naval Unit NCC Changanacherry during the training year 2022-2023.
The subunit is functioning under the supervision of the Associate NCC Officer (ANO). Under the ANO, a Cadet Captain (CC), three Petty Officer Cadets (POC) and six Leading Cadets (LC) lead the cadets in training and activities. On select Saturdays in the year, cadets receive training from Indian Navy personnel (on deputation) in Service Subject, Drill, Boat Pulling, Rigging, Firing, Semaphore, Tent Pitching, Ship Modelling etc. as scheduled by 5 Kerala Naval Unit NCC Changanacherry.
Objectives
- To instill qualities like discipline, teamwork, altruism and a secular outlook, shaping cadets into responsible and contributing members of society.
- To provide a suitable environment to motivate the youth so that they may take up a career in the armed forces.
- To impart basic naval knowledge and skills through practical drills, theoretical lessons and provide exposure to sailing, navigation, communication, and other naval skills.
- To build self-confidence and a sense of adventure in the cadets, preparing them for challenges and leadership roles.
