Since our college’s inception in 1965, Mathematics hasn’t just been a subject—it’s been the bedrock of our academic voyage. Under the visionary guidance of Prof K I Abdul Lathif, the founder Head of the Department, we reached a pivotal milestone by securing affiliation for B.Sc Mathematics from Kerala University. This laid the foundation for the debut of B.Sc. Mathematics (Model I) in 1980, not only delivering a robust curriculum but igniting a spirit of innovation by introducing Operations Research as an elective paper. Alongside, Physics and Statistics were offered as complementary courses, painting a canvas of interdisciplinary learning and collaboration.
Driven by a sincere commitment to academic excellence and societal enrichment, 1994 marked the inception of M.Sc Mathematics, further enriching our academic landscape. In 2011, embracing change and evolution, we have Applicable Mathematics in our curriculum as open course under CBCSS, welcoming students from diverse streams into our fold, fostering inclusivity and diversity.
And now, in 2024, we stand on the cusp of another educational zenith—a pathway of flexibility and empowerment. The MGU-UGP program offers a degree in 3 years, an honors degree in 4 years, and a research-focused degree in 4 years, embellished with more credits. This novel pathway allows students to tailor their academic journey, with B.Sc Mathematics as the core, complemented by a rich array of minor subjects and multidisciplinary courses, opening doors to boundless possibilities.
As we celebrated our Ruby Jubilee in 2020, we paused to reflect on our journey—a picturesque landmark of growth, resilience, and endless commitment. And now, with eager anticipation, we await the opportunity to partake in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of our esteemed institution—a testament to our enduring legacy of excellence and service.
Our program stands as a beacon of academic rigor and holistic development, with Mathematics serving as the cornerstone, complemented by Physics and Statistics. The inclusion of Operations Research equips students with specialized skills, preparing them for diverse career paths and challenges. Moreover, our emphasis on communication skills, through English and Additional Languages like Malayalam or Hindi, fosters a culture of inclusivity and multiculturalism. We are waiting to finalize the official procedures for the inclusion of “Graph Theory with applications to modern world” and “Data Analysis for AI driven world” as specialized papers in the UGP Honours Curriculum.
Beyond the classroom confines, a B.Sc. Mathematics degree unlocks doors to a realm of opportunities, spanning Computer Science, Statistics, Finance, Information Technology, and Game Theory.
