Introduction

The National Service Scheme (NSS) at St. Aloysius College, Edathua, stands as a testament to our institution’s unwavering commitment to social responsibility and community engagement. Established from the very inception of our college, the NSS unit has been instrumental in addressing critical social issues and fostering a culture of service among our students. With two active units and 200 dedicated volunteers, our NSS initiatives have consistently earned accolades, including the prestigious ‘Best Unit’ award multiple times. Through a wide array of programs, we strive to make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and strengthen our bond with the community we serve.

Our college boasts two active NSS units comprising 200 volunteers who tirelessly work to address critical social issues and foster community development. The diverse range of programs we undertake aims to make a positive impact on individuals’ lives while strengthening our bond with the community.

Motto of NSS

The motto of the National Service Scheme (NSS) is “Not Me But You”. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person’s point of view. It emphasizes the belief that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society as a whole, and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the community.

Objectives

Promote Social Responsibility : Cultivate a sense of social responsibility and community service among students, encouraging them to contribute positively to society.
Community Development : Implement initiatives that address key social issues, enhance the quality of life for underprivileged communities, and foster sustainable development.
Educational Support : Provide educational resources and support to schools and students, promoting literacy, bio-farming, and environmental awareness.
Health and Wellness : Conduct health camps, blood donation drives, and wellness programs to improve community health and raise awareness about critical health issues.
Environmental Protection : Engage in activities that promote environmental sustainability, including tree planting, plastic waste management, and campus cleaning drives.
Disaster Relief : Actively participate in disaster relief efforts, providing rescue, support, and resources to affected communities during emergencies.
Empowerment of Differently-Abled : Support the differently-abled community through various initiatives, including the construction of homes, provision of assistive devices, and educational support.
Cultural Integration : Organize cultural events and national celebrations to foster a sense of unity, national pride, and cultural awareness among students.
Skill Development : Offer workshops and seminars on various topics such as career guidance, digital literacy, and financial literacy to enhance the skills and knowledge of students.
Promote Volunteering : Encourage and facilitate student participation in national and state-level programs, providing them with opportunities for personal growth and leadership development.

Key Initiatives

Snehaveedu Project : This initiative focuses on building homes for the homeless. To date, we have completed five projects, with eleven ongoing.
Karuthal : Every Wednesday, we distribute food packets to the Snehabhavan Old Age Home, totaling around 1000 plus packets annually.
CARE - School Adoption Project : Through an MoU with St. Aloysius LP School Edathua, we provide school supplies, bio-farming initiatives, fruit tree saplings, and form a Nature Club. Additionally, we conduct awareness seminars and exhibitions.
Bhodhini : This project involves library donation initiatives to support education.
Smrudham : We distribute Onam kits to the needy during the Onam Festival.
Punarjani : Our pain and palliative care initiatives include distributing wheelchairs and financial support for dialysis and cancer patients, along with house visits to provide provisions and stationery.
Kaithaangu : Supporting the differently-abled community by building homes, creating audio books for blind students, and conducting household surveys.
Jeevanam : Promoting self-employment through projects like Fresh Glare dish wash.
Flood Relief Activities : Our volunteers actively participate in flood rescue operations and provide support to relief camps.
Environmental Protection : Initiatives include campus cleaning drives, plastic waste disposal, tree planting, and bio-farming at the campus and adopted schools. We also conduct various awareness campaigns and clean-up drives in local areas.
Awareness and Education Programs : We organize seminars on topics such as anti-drug awareness, menstrual hygiene, mental health, financial literacy, and digital literacy. Additionally, we conduct voter ID enrollment and PSC online registration drives.
National Integration and Cultural Events : Celebrations include Independence Day, Onam, Republic Day, and Women's Day. We also host film screenings, art exhibitions, and cultural workshops.
Health and Wellness Initiatives : Activities include eye donation drives, free eye and ear testing camps, blood donation camps, yoga demonstrations, and CPR training sessions.

Achievements and Recognitions

Our NSS unit’s exemplary performance has been recognized by MG University and honored with the KC Mathew Foundation Award. Additionally, our volunteers have participated in national and state-level programs, showcasing their leadership and commitment to service.

At St. Aloysius College, Edathua, the NSS unit embodies our institution’s ethos of compassion, dedication, and community service. Through our varied initiatives, we strive to make a meaningful difference in society and inspire our volunteers to become responsible, empathetic citizens.

The NSS Unit of St. Aloysius College, Edathua has been honoured with the NSS Appreciation Awards from Mahatma Gandhi University. The awards include recognition for Best NSS Unit, Best Programme Officer (Mr. Manoj Xavier), Best NSS Volunteer (Male) – Arjun V. Anilkumar, and Best NSS Volunteer (Female) – Abhirami S.

The awards were presented by the Hon. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. C. T. Aravindakumar. Notably, this achievement marks the third consecutive year that the college has received these prestigious honours.
